Are ATU (aerobic) inspections required by law in Washington State?
Yes. Washington State law (WAC 246-272A) requires all aerobic treatment unit (ATU) owners to maintain a valid Operation & Maintenance (O&M) contract with a certified service provider and have their system inspected at least twice per year. Failure to comply can result in county fines and a required repair order.
How much do ATU O&M inspections cost?
O&M contract pricing depends on system type and inspection frequency. Many homeowners bundle their required inspections into the Blackwater Protection Plan — one monthly rate that covers compliance, service calls, and priority repairs. Call (425) 777-4545 for pricing.
What happens during an ATU O&M inspection?
We inspect the aeration system, check the blower/aerator, test chlorine levels (if applicable), inspect spray heads, check alarms, and confirm the system is treating effluent to the required standard. We file the required compliance report with the county health department on your behalf.
My ATU alarm is going off — is that an emergency?
Yes — treat it as one. ATU alarms can indicate aeration failure, which means the system is no longer treating effluent properly. This is a health and compliance issue. Call (425) 777-4545 immediately.
Can I bundle my ATU maintenance into the Protection Plan?
Yes — and this is the most cost-effective way to handle required O&M. ATU owners can include their biannual inspections in their Protection Plan, covering compliance, parts, and service calls in one predictable monthly rate.
