7 Warning Signs Your Septic System Is Failing
Catching septic problems early can save you tens of thousands of dollars. These are the seven warning signs every homeowner in Western Washington should know.
7 Warning Signs Your Septic System Is Failing
Septic failures rarely happen overnight — they give you warnings. Knowing what to look for can save you thousands. Here are the seven most common signs:
1. Slow Drains Throughout the House
When every drain in your home moves slowly, it's rarely a clogged pipe. It usually means your septic tank is full or your drain field is failing.
2. Gurgling Sounds in Pipes
Gurgling after flushing or after water drains is a sign of back-pressure from a full tank or blocked outlet pipe.
3. Sewage Odors Inside or Outside
Hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg smell) indoors means gas is escaping back through your plumbing. Odors outside can indicate a leaking tank or saturated drain field.
4. Soggy Ground or Standing Water Over the Drain Field
If your yard is wet, spongy, or has standing water above where your drain field runs — and it hasn't rained — your drain field is likely failing.
5. Unusually Lush, Green Grass in One Spot
Ironically, the best-looking patch of grass in your yard can be the worst sign. Excess nutrients from a leaking system fertilize the grass directly above it.
6. Sewage Backup Into Your Home
The most serious sign. If sewage is coming up through floor drains or toilets, call Blackwater Services immediately at (425) 777-4545. This is an emergency.
7. Your Tank Has Never Been Pumped
If you've owned your home for more than 5 years and can't recall a pump-out, the clock is running. Don't wait for symptoms.
If you notice any of these, call Blackwater Services at (425) 777-4545. We're available 24/7 for emergencies and offer same-day septic tank repair across Snohomish, Skagit, and Island Counties.
